NASCAR Shocks Fans by Stripping Austin Dillon of Playoff Spot After Controversial Richmond Finish!

NASCAR revokes Austin Dillon's automatic playoff berth over Richmond finish

NASCAR has revoked Austin Dillon’s automatic playoff berth, following his controversial actions during the final lap at Richmond Raceway. This decision has sent shockwaves through the racing community, sparking debates about sportsmanship and the integrity of the competition.

Dillon crossed the finish line first after a last-lap incident where he turned Joey Logano and then hooked Denny Hamlin, believing he had secured a playoff spot with his regular-season victory. However, NASCAR’s ruling means he cannot claim this win for playoff eligibility.

While Dillon retains the victory itself, he has been penalized with a 25-point deduction in the standings, and his spotter, Brandon Benesch, faces a three-race suspension. NASCAR’s regulations state that race finishes must not be tainted by violations or actions that harm the sport.

Additionally, NASCAR fined Logano $50,000 for performing a burnout in front of Dillon’s crew and family after the race, an act he has chosen not to appeal.

Richard Childress Racing (RCR) has announced plans to appeal the penalties imposed on Dillon. The decision from NASCAR’s appeals panel is expected before the regular-season finale on September 1 at Darlington.

“Richard Childress Racing expresses disappointment over NASCAR’s penalty against the No. 3 team,” the organization stated. “We disagree with the ruling and will pursue an appeal.”

Elton Sawyer, NASCAR’s Senior Vice President of Competition, emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the playoffs and championship. He stated that Dillon’s actions from Turn 3 to the finish line warranted the penalty.

Sawyer also mentioned that NASCAR aims to expedite decision-making processes regarding penalties in the future, acknowledging the need for timely and accurate rulings.

Although there was consideration of stripping Dillon of his win, NASCAR found no existing rule to support such an action. As it stands, Dillon, currently 26th in the standings, must win one of the remaining races—Michigan, Daytona, or Darlington—to secure a playoff spot.

Dillon was on course for a significant turnaround in his season, having previously struggled at 32nd in the standings after 22 races. However, a caution with two laps to go led to an overtime restart, setting the stage for the final lap drama.

Logano initially had a strong restart, but Dillon’s aggressive maneuvering in Turn 3 changed the race’s outcome. Dillon claimed he was merely trying to gain position and did not intend to turn Hamlin.

Both Logano and Hamlin expressed that Dillon’s actions deserved a penalty, with Logano questioning the fairness of such aggressive driving being labeled as “racing.” Hamlin pointed out that similar moves in other races have led to penalties.

With Dillon’s playoff eligibility now in question, four playoff spots remain open, and at least one will go to a driver without a win this season. Chris Buescher and Ross Chastain are currently tied for the fourth spot among winless drivers, keeping the competition tight.

Martin Truex Jr. is ahead by 78 points, Ty Gibbs is 18 points up, and Bubba Wallace has a narrow three-point lead. Buescher and Chastain are tied for the last playoff position, with Chase Briscoe trailing by 99 points.
