How the Mahomes Dynasty was built: Ranking the Chiefs’ Super Bowls (so far)

The Mahomes Dynasty has been built through a series of unforgettable Super Bowl moments.

Injuries, thrilling comebacks, and pivotal game moments characterize each Kansas City Super Bowl appearance, creating a unique narrative for every title game. Ranking these matchups provides insight into their significance within the franchise’s history.

As Super Bowl LIX approaches in New Orleans, where the Chiefs will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles at the Caesars Superdome, they seek their fourth Lombardi Trophy in just seven seasons. Here is a ranking of Kansas City’s Super Bowl appearances, from the least to the most entertaining.

4. Super Bowl LV: Buccaneers 31, Chiefs 9

This game ranks last as it marks the sole Super Bowl loss for the Chiefs during the Andy Reid-Patrick Mahomes era.

Kansas City initially gained a 3-0 lead, but Tom Brady and the Buccaneers quickly took control. Under the strategic guidance of Todd Bowles, the Bucs’ defense intercepted Mahomes twice, sacked him three times, and recorded nine quarterback hits.

The nine points represented the Chiefs’ lowest scoring performance of the 2020 season, including both regular season and playoffs. This game also marked Mahomes’ first loss by more than ten points in his NFL career.

3. Super Bowl LIV: Chiefs 31, 49ers 20

Kansas City clinched its first Super Bowl victory in 50 years, winning by a double-digit margin. However, the journey to victory was anything but easy.

After trailing 20-10 in the third quarter, following a field goal by the 49ers, Mahomes threw two interceptions. Nevertheless, he rallied the team to score 21 consecutive points in the final 6:13, stunning San Francisco.

2. Super Bowl LVIII: Chiefs 25, 49ers 22 (OT)

The rematch against the 49ers last season was historic, being only the second Super Bowl to go into overtime. While it was thrilling, it also contained moments that felt lackluster.

After the Niners kicked a field goal on the first possession of overtime, Mahomes led a decisive touchdown drive, culminating in a short pass to Mecole Hardman in the end zone.

1. Super Bowl LVII: Chiefs 38, Eagles 35

This game stands as the most thrilling Super Bowl in the Reid-Mahomes era, at least so far.

In the second quarter, Mahomes aggravated a high ankle sprain suffered earlier in the playoffs but persevered to lead the Chiefs back from a 10-point halftime deficit. He threw two of his three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and executed a crucial 26-yard scramble on his injured ankle to set up the game-winning drive.

Despite Jalen Hurts of the Eagles outshining Mahomes with 374 total yards and four touchdowns, a controversial holding penalty on cornerback James Bradberry late in the game forced Philadelphia to use its final timeout. Kansas City successfully converted the game-winning field goal with just eight seconds remaining.

This matchup became the third-highest scoring Super Bowl in history, with the Eagles’ 35 points marking the most ever scored by a losing team.
