Colorado social media caused a stir with a bizarrely edited video showcasing quarterback Shedeur Sanders completing a touchdown pass to wide receiver LaJohntay Wester during practice. The video was simply captioned: “Darts only.”
However, the reaction to this clip was far from straightforward.
The footage featured two distinct angles of Sanders’ throw, leading many to speculate that it was a compilation of two separate plays. Viewers began to suspect that Colorado’s social media team had edited together an incomplete pass with another successful throw, creating the illusion of a completed touchdown. This theory gained traction among the thousands of users who engaged with the video on X, which has amassed an impressive 8.9 million views.
As the backlash grew, Colorado responded by releasing both full angles of the play side-by-side on Wednesday, affirming that Sanders indeed made a successful completion.
Sanders and the Buffaloes are looking to improve after finishing last season with a 4-8 record (1-8 in Pac-12 play) and are now preparing for a return to the revamped Big 12 conference.
In his inaugural season at a Power 5 program, Sanders recorded 3,230 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and only three interceptions, achieving a passer rating of 151.7 with a completion rate of 69.3%. He is currently viewed as a strong contender for the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, with odds placing him second at +500, following Georgia’s Carson Beck at +300.
Wester, who transferred to Colorado after four seasons at Florida Atlantic, is coming off a standout 2023 season where he set career highs with 108 receptions, 1,168 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns. He is among several Florida players who have joined Coach Prime, a Florida native, since he took over the Colorado program in late 2022.
The Colorado Buffaloes will kick off the 2024 college football season at home against North Dakota State on August 29, with their first Big 12 matchup scheduled against Baylor at home on September 21.
