The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly bringing back wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster on a one-year deal, according to multiple sources, with NFL Media being the first to break the news. This move marks a significant return for Smith-Schuster, who played an instrumental role in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory in 2022.
During his first season with the Chiefs, Smith-Schuster showcased his talent by making 78 receptions for 933 yards and scoring three touchdowns in the regular season. He further contributed in the playoffs, adding 10 catches for 89 yards, proving to be a reliable target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Following his successful stint in Kansas City, Smith-Schuster signed a three-year, $25 million contract with the New England Patriots. Unfortunately, his performance was hindered by an ankle injury, leading to a disappointing season where he recorded just 29 catches for 260 yards and one touchdown. The Patriots decided to release him earlier this month, opening the door for his return to the Chiefs.
Before joining the Chiefs, Smith-Schuster spent five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he gained recognition for his standout abilities. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2018, achieving career-highs with 111 receptions and 1,426 receiving yards.
His return to the Chiefs comes at a critical time, as the team faces challenges with injuries to new addition Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who dislocated his shoulder in the first preseason game, and legal issues surrounding Rashee Rice, who has been charged in connection with a spring automobile accident in Dallas. Smith-Schuster’s experience and skills may prove essential as the Chiefs navigate these uncertainties ahead of the regular season.
