Penn State’s Abdul Carter, a standout defensive end who boldly claims to be “the best player in the country,” is currently facing a stress reaction in his right foot. This injury poses a significant concern for the talented athlete as he prepares for the next level of competition.
As a potential No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Carter finds himself at a crossroads. He can either opt for preemptive surgery, which would entail inserting a screw into his foot with an estimated recovery period of eight weeks, or delay the procedure, as reported by ESPN.
This latest injury comes shortly after Carter dealt with a shoulder issue late in the 2024 college football season. Although he will not participate in workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this week, he aims to be ready for Penn State’s pro day on March 28.
Last season, Carter made a remarkable impact on the field, recording 12.0 sacks, leading the Big Ten with 24 tackles for loss, defending four passes, and accumulating 68 combined tackles. His outstanding performance earned him the title of Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, contributing to PSU’s journey to the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Carter’s draft prospects appear to hinge on the quarterback needs of the Tennessee Titans (No. 1), Cleveland Browns (No. 2), and New York Giants (No. 3), all of whom are searching for stability at the position. Meanwhile, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward, a Heisman finalist, are expected to be the first two quarterbacks selected.
In an intriguing twist, Carter is vying with Colorado’s two-way star and 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter, to be the first non-quarterback drafted. This competition adds another layer of excitement to the upcoming draft, showcasing the depth of talent available.
