Nebraska football may soon finalize a new secondary coach after Evan Cooper’s resignation. Cooper, who had served under Matt Rhule for 11 years, stepped down on Friday. ESPN’s Pete Thamel suggests Rhule is likely to hire John Butler for the position. Butler, previously with the Buffalo Bills, has a rich coaching history, including stints with the Houston Texans and various college teams.
Butler’s NFL tenure includes work with the Bills as a defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, plus four years with the Texans. Before transitioning to the NFL, Butler gained Big Ten experience coaching at Penn State and Minnesota, even serving as defensive coordinator for the Nittany Lions in his final year.
In addition to his NFL and Big Ten roles, Butler’s career spans positions at South Carolina, Harvard, Texas State, Midwestern State, and Texas as a graduate assistant. His expertise extends beyond the secondary, encompassing linebackers and special teams. Nebraska is gearing up for Big Ten Media Days in 18 days and the 2024 season kickoff against UTEP in 56 days.
