Gregg Popovich says he won’t re-join the Spurs this season, but he remains hopeful about returning to coaching in the future.
During a meeting with the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday, Popovich shared his decision regarding this season, making it clear that while he is stepping back now, he has not ruled out a return. The legendary coach, who holds the record for the most wins in NBA coaching history, has been absent from the team since suffering a stroke at the Spurs’ home arena on November 2.
“I’ve decided not to return to the sidelines this season,” Popovich stated in a team-released announcement. “Mitch Johnson, the acting coach, and his staff have done an exceptional job, and the players’ commitment and teamwork during this challenging season have been remarkable.”
Though Popovich has maintained regular communication with Johnson and some team officials, he has not been present at games or practices since his health setback. This absence has left many fans and analysts wondering about the future of the Spurs under his leadership.
“I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future,” he added, emphasizing his commitment to recovery.
Popovich’s visit to the team coincided with news that All-Star center Victor Wembanyama would not play again this season due to deep vein thrombosis found in his shoulder. This adds another layer of complexity to the Spurs’ current season.
While the Spurs have not provided recent updates on Popovich’s rehabilitation, they have indicated that he is expected to make a full recovery. However, details regarding any specific health issues he may be facing remain undisclosed.
In 2023, Popovich signed a five-year contract extension with the Spurs, which would keep him on the sidelines through the 2027-28 season. His only previous public comment regarding his health came in mid-December, when he expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he and his family have received during this difficult time.
