Flyers Select Luchanko Amid Trade Moves
The Flyers traded down to the 13th spot in the 2024 NHL draft, picking Jett Luchanko from the OHL’s Guelph Storm. In exchange with the Wild, they gained a 2025 third-round pick. Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 187 pounds, Luchanko is known for his speed and playmaking, tallying 74 points in 68 games last season.
A rising star for Canada at the 2024 IIHF U-18 World Junior Championship, Luchanko posted seven points in seven games, contributing to Canada’s gold medal win. Despite being one of the youngest in his draft, his potential is significant, even though some scouting services rated him lower than other available players.
Flyers GM Danny Briere highlighted the team’s need for centers, with Morgan Frost being the only first-round center on their current roster. Luchanko’s selection is seen as a strategic move to strengthen their center depth, especially with their eyes on pairing him with top prospect Matvei Michkov in the future. The Flyers also traded their second first-round pick to the Oilers for a future first-round selection.
