Vlatko Andonovski outearned Gregg Berhalter during the 2023-24 fiscal year, receiving $454,048 for his last nine months as head coach of the U.S. women’s soccer team, compared to Berhalter’s $376,214 during the initial nine months of his second term as the men’s coach.
These salary details emerged on Thursday when the U.S. Soccer Federation disclosed its tax return for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. Andonovski’s base salary was reported at $411,471, surpassing Berhalter’s base of $346,452. The total compensation figures included deferred earnings and non-taxable benefits.
Andonovski’s resignation came in August 2023 after the U.S. team faced an unexpected exit in the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup, marking the earliest elimination for the Americans in tournament history. His reported pay continued through December 2023.
Berhalter’s contract had expired at the end of 2022, but he was reinstated in June 2023 following an investigation that cleared him of withholding information during his hiring. The inquiry was initiated after the Reyna family alerted the U.S. Soccer Federation about a decades-old domestic violence allegation involving Berhalter and his wife.
After being dismissed last July due to his team’s early exit from Copa America, Berhalter was succeeded by Mauricio Pochettino. Emma Hayes was appointed as the women’s coach in November 2023, set to begin in May, and she successfully guided the U.S. to its fifth Olympic gold medal last summer.
JT Batson, who became CEO in September 2022, earned a total of $831,890, which included a base salary of $609,308 along with a bonus of $155,932.
Hank Steinbrecher, who served as secretary general from 1990 to 2000, reported earnings of $940,848 for the fiscal year. Dan Flynn, who succeeded Steinbrecher and was CEO until his retirement in 2019, received $1,558,494. These amounts were categorized as “other reportable compensation” and noted as deferred on previous tax returns.
Matt Crocker, appointed sporting director in April 2023, earned $430,484, which included a base salary of $328,401, a $40,000 bonus, and a $40,000 relocation allowance.
Kate Markgraf, a former defender and general manager of the women’s national team, announced her departure in August 2023, earning $361,265, primarily from her base salary of $341,465.
Goalkeeper Matt Turner topped the player earnings, bringing in $524,696. Other notable players included midfielders Yunus Musah ($435,881) and Brenden Aaronson ($429,734), as well as defenders Antonee Robinson ($429,225) and Sergino Dest ($424,777).
The U.S. Soccer Federation allocated $4,160,161 to Soccer United Marketing, linked to Major League Soccer, for sponsorship deals and $3,123,211 to the law firm Latham & Watkins.
Revenue reached $196.8 million, a significant increase from $149.2 million in the previous fiscal year, while expenses rose slightly to $190.9 million from $187.2 million.
