The Portland Trail Blazers kicked off the Donovan Clingan era with a thrilling comeback against the San Antonio Spurs during the Las Vegas Summer League. Despite falling short with a 77-83 loss, the Blazers showcased resilience in the final minutes, recovering from an 18-point deficit. Team leader Jonah Herscu’s squad battled fiercely, putting the Spurs on edge as the clock wound down.
Donovan Clingan’s presence was felt strongly, although he struggled offensively, scoring just four points on 1 of 8 shooting. Defensively, however, he dominated with 13 rebounds, five blocks, and a steal over 27 minutes, highlighting his potential as a future defensive powerhouse. His UConn teammate, Stephon Castle, gave him stiff opposition but ultimately succumbed to Clingan’s formidable defense.
Rayan Rupert emerged as a standout player for the Blazers, recording 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Contributions came from other key players too: Kris Murray added nine points, and two-way contracted wings Justin Minaya and Bryce McGowens provided defensive sparks despite some turnovers. Alex Reese led the Blazers’ offense in the first half, finishing with 16 points. The Blazers are set to face the Philadelphia 76ers next.
