Yankees Injury Updates: Berti, Schmidt, and Rizzo
Yankees utility infielder Jon Berti, initially set to play in rehab games, will receive another PRP injection on his calf in New York after a minor setback. Manager Aaron Boone noted that while Berti’s return isn’t imminent, the setback hasn’t completely derailed his progress. Berti, sidelined since May 25 due to his calf strain, was batting .273 before his injury and could have provided relief at third base.
Meanwhile, Clarke Schmidt, who has been out since May with a right lat strain, is set to throw a light bullpen session on Saturday, potentially leading to a full session on Tuesday. Schmidt, who posted a solid 2.52 ERA across 11 starts, remains hopeful for an August return, expressing satisfaction with his rehab process so far.
Anthony Rizzo is still making slow progress in recovering from an arm fracture. Boone acknowledged Rizzo’s gradual improvement but emphasized that it’s a slow process. Additionally, reliever Scott Effross and pitcher Cody Poteet are working on their respective recoveries, while the Yankees signed Thomas Pannone to a minor league deal, adding depth to their pitching options.
