Yankees’ Gerrit Cole addressed concerns about his elbow soreness, stating, “Something wasn’t right,” during a press conference on Saturday.
Cole informed reporters, including a correspondent from MLB.com, that the results from his medical imaging have been shared, and he is currently seeking additional opinions regarding his injury.
“I’ve still got some hope,” he expressed, conveying a sense of determination despite the uncertainty.
Last season, the right-handed pitcher faced challenges, missing the beginning of the year due to nerve irritation and swelling in his right elbow. Despite these setbacks, the six-time All-Star managed to achieve an 8-5 record with a 3.41 ERA over 17 starts, and he excelled in the postseason with a 2.17 ERA in five appearances.
Cole, who signed a staggering $324 million, nine-year deal before the 2020 season, demonstrated his prowess on the mound by winning the 2023 AL Cy Young Award with a remarkable 15-4 record and an AL-best 2.63 ERA across 33 starts.
However, the Yankees are grappling with a wave of injuries during spring training. Right-hander Luis Gil will be sidelined at the start of the season due to a lat strain, while Giancarlo Stanton is set to begin the year on the injured list due to discomfort in both elbows. Additionally, infielder DJ LeMahieu is dealing with a left calf strain.
