WNBA Scores $2.2 Billion in Groundbreaking Television Rights Deals

The WNBA’s future looks promising with a new media rights framework nearing resolution. The league anticipates earning around $2.2 billion over 11 years through deals with Disney, NBC, and Amazon, as confirmed by The Washington Post. These new deals, negotiated alongside the NBA, dramatically increase the WNBA’s annual media rights value from $60 million to approximately $200 million, reflecting the growing interest in women’s sports.

Cathy Engelbert, the WNBA Commissioner, has aimed to more than double the league’s media rights revenue, surpassing expectations with this substantial increase. This boost is expected to reshape the league’s financial landscape amidst rising audience engagement and interest. Players are likely to opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement after this year, anticipating higher salaries with the new structure. Additionally, two new expansion teams are set to join the league over the next two years.

Criticism exists regarding the WNBA’s rights being negotiated with the NBA, with some feeling the league could stand on its own merit. Nonetheless, Engelbert and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver argue the benefits of a joint approach, emphasizing the value of offering nearly year-round content to streaming services. Player association leader Terri Jackson remains cautious, seeking clarity on the valuation process but acknowledges the undeniable growth and commitment from fans and players alike.
