Why the Phillies’ Struggles Aren’t Worrisome While the Padres and D-backs Are Turning Heads, According to John Smoltz

Why Phillies' slide isn't concerning and Padres, D-backs are 'scary,’ per John Smoltz

The Phillies’ slide isn’t a major concern, according to John Smoltz. He points out that every team goes through rough patches, especially against tough competition. Their earlier dominance showcased their potential, and this slump is likely a temporary setback rather than a sign of deeper issues.

In a recent discussion, Hall of Famer John Smoltz, now an analyst for MLB on FOX, provided insights into the competitive playoff landscape in the National League. He highlighted how the Padres’ strategic moves to enhance their bullpen and the Diamondbacks’ impressive performance are keeping the Dodgers alert. Meanwhile, the Phillies’ recent struggles have allowed the Braves and Mets to close the gap.

Smoltz: “In a short season, teams can experiment with their bullpen, but it’s not sustainable over the long haul. If players are overworked, they might struggle when it matters most. Strengthening the bullpen was a smart move, especially when the offense can secure leads, setting them up for a postseason push.”

Smoltz also expressed surprise at the Diamondbacks’ emergence as a formidable contender. While initially overlooked, their ability to defeat stronger teams has proven their mettle. He noted that San Diego’s offense, when healthy, poses a unique threat, while Arizona prefers to create havoc on the bases, showcasing different styles of intimidation.

The Giants retained Blake Snell, who recently threw a no-hitter and has shown dominance since his return from the injured list in July. What makes him such a challenging pitcher to hit?

Smoltz explained, “Snell’s stuff is incredibly difficult to hit, but that can also lead to control issues. His mechanics are unconventional, and he has pitches that can disappear. When he commands his fastball, he’s nearly unhittable. However, if he struggles with his control, he can find himself in trouble quickly, leading to high pitch counts and early exits.”

The Phillies have displayed strength throughout the season, yet their performance has dipped since the All-Star break. Are there any specific concerns regarding their recent slump?

Smoltz acknowledged some offensive concerns, noting that a few players have cooled off and injuries in the pitching staff have taken a toll. However, he emphasized that they are facing tough opponents during this stretch. “Good teams dominate when they can, and the Phillies are in a challenging phase right now, but they are likely to bounce back.”

Are you monitoring Gil’s innings and velocity closely? What should fans expect from him as the season progresses?

Smoltz responded, “The Yankees need to be cautious with their pitchers, especially with the current state of their rotation. Many teams are struggling with pitching philosophies, which complicates decisions. When unexpected challenges arise during a pivotal season, it can limit options. They must manage innings carefully and communicate effectively about expectations.”

John Smoltz, an iconic figure in baseball as a first-ballot Hall of Famer, eight-time All-Star, and National League Cy Young Award winner, serves as the lead game analyst for FOX MLB. He not only covers marquee regular-season games but also contributes to the All-Star Game and a full slate of postseason matchups, including Division Series, League Championship Series, and the World Series.
