Myles Garrett’s Groundbreaking Contract: A Game-Changer for the NFL Landscape

What Myles Garrett's record extension with Browns tells us about the NFL

Myles Garrett’s record extension with the Cleveland Browns signals a significant shift in the NFL landscape.

Earlier last month, he made headlines by publicly requesting a trade, expressing his desire to join a contender. He stated in a press release that his ultimate goal was “never to go from Cleveland to Canton,” but instead “to compete and win a Super Bowl.” Reports suggested he was resistant to a contract extension. Just days ago, he sought a face-to-face meeting with owner Jimmy Haslam to discuss his trade request, only to be turned down.

However, the air of tension has dissipated remarkably fast. Garrett and the Browns have reached a four-year extension that keeps the star edge rusher in Cleveland until 2030, as confirmed by the team. This mega-deal is valued at $160 million, with $123.5 million in guarantees, according to FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz. At an impressive $40 million per year, Garrett now holds the title of the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Notably, a no-trade clause is included in his contract.

This rapid turnaround in the Garrett-Browns situation serves as a reminder that money often resolves conflicts in the NFL.

Despite the new contract, the issues that prompted Garrett’s trade request remain unchanged. There has been no significant talent acquisition through free agency or the draft for a team that finished with a dismal 3-14 record last season, sharing the title for the worst in the league. The Browns still face limited cap space, ranking 26th in effective cap space with only $4.09 million available, according to OTC. They are still burdened by the guaranteed money owed on Deshaun Watson’s controversial contract, and they have yet to secure a reliable quarterback for the future.

Despite these ongoing challenges, Garrett now stands as the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league by a significant margin. The second-highest, Maxx Crosby, an edge rusher for the Las Vegas Raiders, recently signed a contract averaging $35.5 million.

Garrett received a substantial pay increase, which may have been the underlying goal all along. While he still aspires to play for a championship contender, the $123 million in new guarantees serves as a compelling incentive when a trade is not an option.

The big picture

With Garrett’s extension now in place, attention turns to other star players eligible for contract extensions, who are likely to benefit from this landmark deal.

The Cincinnati Bengals have already indicated their intention to make wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase the highest-paid non-quarterback in league history. However, delaying this deal has allowed the price tag for the All-Pro wideout to rise. Just in the past few days, two new financial benchmarks have emerged for the Bengals to meet after Crosby’s recent contract was finalized. The Bengals are also looking to extend fellow star Tee Higgins. Their efforts to retain both receivers long-term have already led to complications, as All-Pro defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who is also seeking an extension, has requested a trade following a meeting with the team last week.

Similarly, the Dallas Cowboys will likely feel the impact of Garrett’s new deal. Pass-rusher Micah Parsons, who boasts 52.5 sacks and four Pro Bowl selections in just four seasons, is due for a new contract. He will likely aim to surpass Garrett’s $40 million average annual salary, which could create a significant financial strain for owner Jerry Jones.

In the NFL, financial agreements can resolve disputes but also create new challenges.
