Draymond Green on Monty Williams’ Firing
Draymond Green expressed little sympathy for former Detroit Pistons coach Monty Williams on "The Draymond Green Show." Detroit dismissed Williams after a dismal 14-68 record in the 2023-24 season, just a year after signing a six-year, $78.5 million contract. Green struggled to comprehend Detroit’s decision, pointing out that the team didn’t allow Williams adequate time to implement his vision.
"They hired him for an all-time contract in NBA history and fired him the next year," Green remarked. "You need time to instill culture. Culture isn’t built overnight." Green emphasized that signing someone to such a lengthy contract implies a long-term commitment that wasn’t honored in this case.
Despite the firing, Williams lands in a favorable situation financially, still earning approximately $65 million over the next five years without coaching. Green sarcastically congratulated Williams, noting that he now gets to spend time with his family while still pocketing a substantial sum. How crazy is that?
