U.S. Soccer and Chelsea are close to finalizing a deal for Mauricio Pochettino to take the helm as the new coach of the United States men’s national team. According to a source familiar with the U.S. Soccer Federation’s plans, an official announcement could come as early as Tuesday or as late as next week, as reported by FOX Sports.
The Athletic indicated on Sunday that the USSF is “hoping to conclude the deal in the next 48 hours.” This suggests that both parties are eager to solidify the arrangement quickly, reflecting the urgency surrounding the national team’s future.

As of Monday morning, no contract had been signed. However, multiple sources indicated that an agreement is nearing formalization, with only a few final details left to iron out.
A meeting of U.S. Soccer’s full board of directors is scheduled for Friday in Atlanta. If the key terms of Pochettino’s contract are settled by then, the board could ratify the agreement during that session. The timing of this step could vary based on the speed of negotiations.
One significant obstacle remains: Pochettino’s severance package from Chelsea. The Argentine coach parted ways with Chelsea after the 2023-24 English Premier League season, and he had a guaranteed two-year contract with the club. Chelsea has a vested interest in facilitating a deal with U.S. Soccer that would minimize their financial obligations to him.
JT Batson, the CEO of U.S. Soccer, along with the federation’s legal team, is actively collaborating with Chelsea and Pochettino to achieve a swift resolution. If the hiring is confirmed this week, Pochettino may be introduced to the national media in New York City the week of August 25. He could also be present in Kansas City for the USMNT’s upcoming friendly match against Canada on September 7.
Reports suggest that Mikey Varas, the U.S. under-20 men’s coach, will lead the senior team during that game, even if Pochettino is officially appointed by then. However, sources indicate that Pochettino might still be on the sidelines for the exhibition against Canada and another match against New Zealand shortly thereafter in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Varas has already prepared a provisional roster to notify clubs about the players being considered for the international window in September, ensuring a smooth transition for the upcoming matches.
