“Texas fears nobody.”
This bold statement accompanied a striking image shared by Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., who proudly displayed a torn Baker Mayfield Oklahoma jersey after the Longhorns’ decisive 34-3 victory over the Sooners in the storied Red River Rivalry.
What caused the significant tear in the Mayfield jersey?
A video captures the moment when Hill and teammate Barryn Sorrell planted the Texas flag right through the Oklahoma jersey at midfield, a symbolic act that underscores the fierce rivalry.
During his tenure at Oklahoma, Mayfield gained notoriety for planting the Oklahoma flag on opposing fields, with his most iconic moment occurring in 2017 after a victory over Ohio State. He made headlines by sprinting down the field, waving the Oklahoma flag, and firmly planting it at the center of Ohio State’s turf.
When asked about his actions after the game, Hill expressed his motivation: “I just felt like it was the right thing for me to do. I’ve seen all the stuff they posted last year, so I felt like it was right for me to just get a little touch of something on them. I just had to post me a little something to just make the team and make us feel good.”
The Red River Rivalry, which began in 1900 and has been a highlight during the State Fair of Texas since 1929, is marked by intense competition and deep-seated animosity. This latest clash was particularly significant as it was the first matchup between the Longhorns and Sooners as members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
With this victory, Texas has extended its series lead to 64-51-5. The Longhorns improved their season record to 6-0, while Oklahoma fell to 4-2.
This moment will undoubtedly add more fuel to the fire in this fierce rivalry.
