South Carolina women’s basketball dominated the 2024 ESPYS in Los Angeles. The undefeated Gamecocks earned the title of Best Team, with A’ja Wilson claiming honors for Best Female Athlete and Best WNBA Player. Head coach Dawn Staley received the prestigious Jimmy V Award for Perseverance, acknowledging her leadership in the fight against cancer and her advocacy for women’s sports and equality.
Prior to the ESPYS, Dawn Staley was celebrated in Las Vegas during USA Basketball’s game against Canada for her contributions to the US women’s program. The Gamecocks traveled to Los Angeles on Wednesday and were honored late in the ceremony. Te-Hina Paopao’s speech highlighted the cohesive spirit of the team, affectionately known as “Dawn’s Daycare.”
The Gamecocks achieved an impressive 38-0 record, clinching their second national championship in three years and third in program history. Known for their top-ranked defense and third-ranked offense, they also maintained the nation’s leading scoring margin. Over the past three years, South Carolina has consistently dominated the AP Poll and remains unbeaten in regular-season games since 2021 and home games since 2020. A’ja Wilson’s performance with the Las Vegas Aces reflects her elite status, further solidifying her influence on and off the court.
