USMNT’s Mauricio Pochettino Deal on the Brink of Finalization!

Sources: USMNT deal for Mauricio Pochettino nearing completion

The USMNT deal for Mauricio Pochettino is nearing completion as the United States Soccer Federation moves forward with plans to appoint the renowned coach for the men’s national team.

Over three weeks have passed since reports emerged from the British media indicating that Pochettino had reached an agreement to lead the USMNT in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted in the United States. According to multiple sources, including FOX Sports, the formalities of the deal are now close to being finalized.

Recent reports revealed that US soccer officials had traveled to Spain to finalize Pochettino’s contract and announce his appointment. However, that trip was unexpectedly canceled, leaving many to speculate about the reasons behind the abrupt change.

Despite the delay, sources indicate that the deal is expected to be completed shortly. Pochettino’s contract awaits approval from U.S. Soccer’s board of directors, which is scheduled to vote on the matter. Although this approval is largely seen as a formality, it had not yet taken place as of Saturday morning.

The expectation is that the board will meet soon, indicating that any financial disagreements between the USSF and Chelsea have likely been resolved. Pochettino, who previously managed Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham, was under contract with Chelsea until 2025. Negotiations between the two parties were necessary to reach an agreement. With the primary obstacle now seemingly cleared, an official announcement could be imminent, potentially before the USMNT, currently under interim coach Mikey Varas, faces New Zealand in a friendly match on Tuesday in Cincinnati.

The team will also compete against Canada on Saturday in the first of two exhibition matches scheduled for September. Pochettino’s inaugural game as head coach of the USMNT is anticipated to be an October 12 friendly against Panama in Austin, Texas.
