Will Howard has been named Ohio State’s starting quarterback as the team gears up for the 2024 season.
The transfer from Kansas State has emerged victorious in the quarterback competition and will lead the Buckeyes in their opening game against Akron, as confirmed by Ohio State head coach Ryan Day during a press conference on Thursday.

“When you analyze the overall performance metrics, Will significantly outperformed his teammates in the team drills,” Day stated.
Currently, Devin Brown stands as the backup quarterback. Day noted that a “big scrimmage” on Saturday could influence the depth chart, indicating that there are still ample practice opportunities available.
As the offseason approached, uncertainty loomed over who would take the reins as Ohio State’s starting quarterback in 2024, especially after Kyle McCord’s departure from the program following a less-than-stellar finish to the 2023 campaign.
Day successfully secured Howard and five-star recruit Julian Sayin from Alabama through the transfer portal. Howard was recognized as one of the top quarterbacks available after his impressive two-year tenure at Kansas State.
Sayin, a highly touted prospect in the Class of 2024, left Alabama following Nick Saban’s retirement announcement in January, having enrolled early at the university.
Ultimately, Howard’s experience and leadership proved pivotal in securing the starting role.
“The players light up when he steps into the huddle. While they appreciate the other quarterbacks, there’s a palpable energy when Will is around, and he is genuinely enthusiastic about guiding the team,” Day remarked.
Last season, Howard showcased his skills by throwing for 2,643 yards, achieving 24 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, while also rushing for 351 yards and 10 touchdowns. His contributions were instrumental in Kansas State’s Big 12 championship victory in 2022.
Heading into 2024, Ohio State boasts one of its most talented rosters during Day’s tenure as head coach. The Buckeyes secured the second spot in the initial AP Poll of the season released on Monday.
