The Philadelphia Phillies showcased a rare defensive marvel on Monday during their 8-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. They executed the first successful triple play of the MLB season in the third inning. It was the Phillies’ first triple play since 2017 and the first 1-3-5 triple play in MLB since 1929, according to Jayson Stark of The Athletic.
This historic play unfolded when Matt Vierling of Detroit hit a line drive directly to Philadelphia pitcher Aaron Nola. Nola swiftly caught the ball, threw to first to catch Carson Kelly, and then the Phillies completed the play at third base as Zach McKinstry had already dashed home. McKinstry appeared unaware of the unfolding play, missing an opportunity to score.
The Phillies dominated the game, jumping to a 4-0 lead with contributions from Bryce Harper’s two-RBI double and Alec Bohm’s homer. They clinched their win with additional runs in the sixth and eighth innings. Currently, the Phillies are riding a three-game winning streak and leading the NL East. In contrast, the Detroit Tigers have dropped six of their last eight games, holding fourth place in the AL Central.
