NFL Playoff Picture: Surprising Broncos, Commanders surge; Cowboys take hit directly. The playoff landscape is shifting as the NFL season progresses, and teams are starting to solidify their positions.

At the forefront of the standings, the Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, and the unexpected Washington Commanders are carving out their postseason paths. Meanwhile, other teams are in a scramble, vying for favorable playoff positioning as the season’s intensity ramps up.

Let’s take a closer look at the NFL playoff picture, highlighting which teams boast the highest chances of making the playoffs after Week 8:

NFC

1. Detroit Lions (6-1)

Playoff probability: 94%

2. Washington Commanders (6-2)

Jayden Daniels has emerged as a standout player, leading the Commanders to a thrilling victory with a last-second, 52-yard Hail Mary pass to Noah Brown. His performance against Caleb Williams showcased his skills, completing 21 of 38 passes for 326 yards and a touchdown while adding 52 rushing yards. The Commanders appear to have the necessary elements to remain competitive.

Playoff probability: 71%

3. Atlanta Falcons (5-3)

The Falcons have turned the tide in their division, having secured two victories over the Buccaneers in the past month. Quarterback Kirk Cousins has excelled against Tampa, throwing for 785 yards and eight touchdowns in those matchups. If the offense can replicate this success consistently, the Falcons could solidify their playoff chances.

Playoff probability: 77%

4. Arizona Cardinals (4-4)

Kyler Murray had a standout performance in the Cardinals’ narrow victory over Miami, throwing for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Their offense showed signs of life, but inconsistencies remain, particularly on defense. With their division still open, the Cardinals have a chance to make a push.

Playoff probability: 32%

5. Green Bay Packers (6-2)

Malik Willis stepped up to lead the Packers to victory against the Jaguars, but their future hinges on the health of Jordan Love. After suffering a groin injury, Love’s status remains uncertain, making the Packers’ playoff prospects a bit shaky.

Playoff probability: 68%

6. Minnesota Vikings (5-2)

After a promising 5-0 start, the Vikings have faced back-to-back losses, raising concerns about their consistency. However, the upcoming schedule appears more favorable, offering them a chance to regain momentum.

Playoff probability: 83%

7. Philadelphia Eagles (5-2)

The Eagles have found their rhythm lately, with improved performances from both their defense and offense. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is regaining form, and the team is closing in on the Commanders after a couple of solid wins.

Playoff probability: 77%

On the outside looking in: The Chicago Bears (4-3) suffered a tough loss against the Commanders. With a solid defense, they have the potential to compete if rookie QB Caleb Williams can improve his performance. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-4) have shown offensive prowess but are now grappling with injuries to key wide receivers Chris Godwin and Mike Evans. The San Francisco 49ers (4-4) remain in contention despite injuries, while the Seattle Seahawks (4-4) are struggling with recent losses. The Los Angeles Rams (3-4) could be a threat with their returning receivers, and the Dallas Cowboys (3-4) need to find more offensive consistency beyond the connection between Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.

AFC

1. Kansas City Chiefs (7-0)

Playoff probability: 99%

2. Houston Texans (6-2)

The Texans have gained a solid lead in the AFC South after a decisive win over the Colts. Their balanced offense and strong defense have been key, although red zone struggles have posed challenges. C.J. Stroud continues to impress, maintaining his rookie form with four wins in five games.

Playoff probability: 97%

3. Buffalo Bills (6-2)

Playoff probability: 96%

4. Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2)

Mike Tomlin’s decision to start Russell Wilson has sparked the Steelers’ offense, leading to two consecutive wins. They face the New York Giants next, aiming to build on their momentum.

Playoff probability: 85%

5. Denver Broncos (5-3)

Under Sean Payton’s leadership, the Broncos have bounced back from an 0-2 start to win five of their last six games. Their defense has been a strong asset, and rookie QB Bo Nix is showing promise with impressive performances, including a standout game against the competition.

Playoff probability: 63%

Despite a disappointing loss to the Browns, the Ravens are still in contention. Their recent success had been built on Derrick Henry’s contributions, but they must find ways to utilize him more effectively moving forward.

Playoff probability: 87%

7. Los Angeles Chargers (4-3)

The Chargers are currently in playoff contention following a win against the struggling Saints. However, their offense needs to find its rhythm, as they have averaged only 16.8 points over the past five games, which is not sustainable in today’s game.

Playoff probability: 68%
