Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings Prediction and Picks - October 20, 2024

The Detroit Lions (4-1, 4-1 ATS, 2-3 O/U) face off against the Minnesota Vikings (5-0, 5-0 ATS, 1-4 O/U) in a highly anticipated NFC North matchup this Sunday afternoon. The Lions are on a roll after a convincing road victory against the Cowboys, while the Vikings remain undefeated following their win over the Jets. Last season, Detroit had the upper hand, winning both encounters against their division rivals.

Lions Aim for Fourth Consecutive Victory

The Detroit Lions are looking to secure their fourth straight win this week. Their only setback this season came in a close loss to the Buccaneers. Since then, they have bounced back with three consecutive victories, including an impressive 42-29 triumph at home against the Seahawks in week four. Following an early bye in week five, Detroit dominated the Cowboys last week, winning 47-9 while entering as 4.5-point favorites. The Lions have consistently delivered, covering the spread in four of their five games this season.

Quarterback Jared Goff has found his rhythm after a slow start. He threw for 292 yards against the Seahawks and followed that performance with 315 yards against Dallas. This season, Goff has accumulated 1,330 passing yards along with an 8:4 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Detroit boasts a formidable rushing attack with running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs has reached at least 80 rushing yards in two games and has a total of 348 yards this season. Montgomery has also shined, surpassing 80 yards in three of five matchups and tallying 351 rushing yards overall. While Amon-Ra St. Brown’s production has dipped compared to last season, he has contributed 289 receiving yards. The Lions’ offense is dynamic, averaging 416 yards per game, placing them among the league’s leaders.

Defensively, the Lions have shown improvement over last year. Although they struggled against a strong Seattle offense, allowing 516 yards, they bounced back by holding the Cowboys to just 251 yards. Unfortunately, the team suffered a significant loss with defensive end Aidan Hutchinson out for the season due to a broken leg. The pass defense has faced challenges, ranking 28th, while the rush defense stands out, holding the third position.

Detroit’s scoring average of 30.2 points per game leads the NFL, while they allow an average of 18.2 points, placing them eighth in that category.

Vikings Continue Their Impressive Streak

The Minnesota Vikings have emerged as one of the biggest surprises in the NFL, remaining the only undefeated team in the NFC. They have taken down notable opponents, including the 49ers, Texans, and Packers. In week five, they edged out the Jets with a 23-17 victory, entering the game as 2.5-point favorites. Following their bye week, the Vikings have successfully covered the spread in all five of their games this season.

Quarterback Sam Darnold is enjoying a career-best season, although he has seen a slight dip in production recently, passing for 181 yards or fewer in two of his last three outings. This season, he has amassed 1,111 yards with an 11:4 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Running back Aaron Jones, who has been instrumental for the Vikings, suffered an injury in the Jets game, but he has still managed to rack up 350 rushing yards this season. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson remains a vital component, consistently delivering with at least 80 receiving yards in every game except one, totaling 450 yards on the season. The Minnesota offense has hit the 30-point mark in three of their five games, averaging 323 yards.

Defensively, the Vikings have excelled, limiting the Jets to just 254 total yards, including 218 through the air. They have allowed 17 points or fewer in all but one game, the exception being their loss to Green Bay. However, their pass defense remains vulnerable, ranking 30th, while their rush defense impressively holds the second spot.

Minnesota averages 27.8 points per game, placing them sixth in the league, and they hold opponents to only 15.2 points on average, putting them fifth in that category.

Betting Insights for Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings

The Detroit Lions are on a winning streak, having claimed victory in three consecutive games and four out of their last five. Despite the Minnesota Vikings’ hot start, many analysts believe their undefeated streak may come to an end in this matchup. Statistical evidence suggests that their offensive capabilities might not be as formidable as they appear. Darnold’s recent performances have shown inconsistencies, with his completion percentage dropping to 45% in the latest game against the Jets and only managing 181 yards in two of his last three outings.

On the other hand, Detroit’s offensive unit has proven to be dynamic and unpredictable. Their recent game against the Cowboys showcased Goff’s proficiency as he threw for 315 yards. The Lions’ passing game ranks fourth in the NFL, a critical factor against the Vikings’ struggling pass defense, which is currently 30th. Additionally, while Minnesota’s rushing attack has been effective, they may face challenges against a robust Detroit rush defense ranked third.
