Sherrone Moore is currently coaching the Michigan Wolverines without a signed contract, marking a unique situation in college football.
Reports from USA Today indicate that despite leading the program, Moore has not yet formalized his position through a contract. He was appointed as the successor to Jim Harbaugh, who took the helm of the Los Angeles Chargers shortly after Michigan’s triumph in the College Football Playoff National Championship. Moore’s appointment was initially based on a memorandum of understanding that required a complete employment agreement to be finalized within 90 days, a deadline that has since passed without resolution.
Warde Manuel, the athletic director at Michigan, provided insights on Moore’s ongoing negotiations.
“They are being worked on as we speak,” Manuel explained in an interview with On3. He noted that while some assistant coaches have secured contracts, the athletic department is managing multiple transitions, including basketball and NCAA matters, alongside changes with their apparel provider, Legends. “These things take time, the contracts,” he added.
Manuel expressed confidence in the mutual understanding between Moore and the university, indicating that a formal agreement is anticipated.
Last week, the Wolverines secured a 30-10 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs, marking Moore’s first official game as head coach. Although the team led by just six points with 10:06 left in the game, they ultimately triumphed. The next challenge for the No. 10 Wolverines is a highly anticipated home game against the No. 3 Texas Longhorns, who also competed in the College Football Playoff last season. This matchup is scheduled for “Big Noon Saturday” at 12 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app.
Moore’s journey with the Wolverines began in 2018, where he initially served as the tight ends coach. He progressed through various roles, including co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, before stepping into his current position as offensive coordinator and acting head coach.
However, his tenure has not been without controversy. Moore was implicated in a recent suspension linked to the NCAA’s investigation into Michigan’s alleged sign-stealing scheme, which involved unauthorized access to opposing teams’ signals. This adds a layer of complexity to his position as he navigates both coaching responsibilities and the scrutiny of the NCAA.
