Michigan Defenders Shine: Hill and Berry Impress in Spring Performance

Analyzing Michigan’s Defensive Backfield Transition

Michigan Wolverines football faces the challenge of replacing three key starters from last year’s defensive backfield. With standout cornerback Josh Wallace heading to the NFL and senior safety Rod Moore out due to injury, the team looks to junior cornerback Will Johnson and graduate safety Makari Paige for leadership. However, filling the remaining positions presents uncertainty.

Sophomore cornerback Jyaire Hill has attracted the most attention this spring. Michigan also added Albany transfer Aamir Hall and UNLV transfer Ricky Johnson. Hill’s impressive spring performance could see him stepping up this fall. Defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan praises Hill’s growth and ability to switch gears from playful to focused, essential qualities for his potential role.

Graduate walk-on Keshaun Harris returns for a sixth season, and senior Ja’Den McBurrows offers flexibility with experience at both outside cornerback and nickel. Additionally, junior safety Zeke Berry is poised to replace Mike Sainristil as the new nickel back. Injuries played a role this spring, with several safeties including Brandyn Hillman and Quinten Johnson sidelined. However, the addition of Jaden Mangham from Michigan State and Wesley Walker from Tennessee strengthens Michigan’s depth and promotes healthy competition within the team.
