Michigan began its defense of the national title with a decisive 30-10 victory over Fresno State, showcasing both grit and determination in their season opener.
Sherrone Moore, stepping into his role as Jim Harbaugh’s full-time successor, energized the crowd at the Big House with his exuberant celebration after the first touchdown. Despite a slow start on offense, the Wolverines rallied, executing key plays that shifted the game’s momentum.
Davis Warren and Alex Orji each contributed a touchdown pass, while Will Johnson made a remarkable interception return for a touchdown, sealing the win for No. 9 Michigan.
The Wolverines (1-0) faced the challenge of integrating new quarterbacks behind a restructured offensive line. Moore’s enthusiasm was palpable as he expressed his excitement for the game, stating, “That’s just who I am. I wear my emotions on my sleeve.” His passion resonated with the players and fans alike.
Fresno State (0-1) proved to be formidable opponents, staying within striking distance at 16-10 midway through the fourth quarter before Michigan pulled away decisively.
Warren, who earned the starting quarterback position over Orji, connected with Colston Loveland for an 18-yard touchdown pass, extending Michigan’s lead to 23-10 with just over five minutes remaining.
Johnson’s interception return of 86 yards exemplified the Wolverines’ defensive prowess, further solidifying their control of the game.
The game commenced with Orji tossing a 3-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Edwards. However, the Wolverines struggled offensively until late in the contest.
Warren completed 15 of 25 passes for 118 yards, along with a touchdown and an interception, marking a commendable performance for a former walk-on who triumphed over leukemia during high school.
Reflecting on his journey, Warren acknowledged the support he received, saying, “I definitely was able to reflect on the people who helped me get here and my family.”
Orji recorded a 3-yard touchdown pass and rushed for 32 yards on five carries.
Loveland, a preseason All-America tight end, had an impressive outing with eight receptions, falling just short of a career-high with 87 receiving yards.
Kalel Mullings also made a significant impact, rushing for 92 yards on 15 carries.
On the other side, Mikey Keene completed 22 of 36 passes for 238 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown pass to Raylen Sharpe in the fourth quarter, which narrowed the Bulldogs’ deficit to six points.
Fresno State will host Sacramento State next, looking to bounce back from their recent loss. Meanwhile, Michigan prepares for a highly anticipated matchup against No. 4 Texas, set for Saturday at noon ET on FOX and the FOX Sports App.
