Mets Edge Out Yankees in Thrilling Subway Series Opener

Mets Power Past Yankees in Home Run Frenzy

Gerrit Cole endured a challenging night as the Mets blasted four home runs in four innings, leading to a 9-7 victory over the Yankees at Citi Field. Cole, in his second start after returning from injury, was tagged for six earned runs on seven hits and four walks. Mark Vientos shined with two homers off Cole, while Harrison Bader and Brandon Nimmo also went deep.

Despite a late scare, the Mets maintained their edge, bolstered by solid relief pitching after David Peterson’s 4 ¹/₃ inning stint. Reed Garrett sealed the win, overcoming Aaron Judge’s grand slam in the eighth. This win ensures the Mets’ eighth consecutive non-losing series.

Injuries and suspensions couldn’t derail them. Edwin Diaz started a 10-game suspension, and Starling Marte hit the injured list. Still, new faces like Tyrone Taylor stepped up, contributing to the Mets’ offensive onslaught. Their 14th win in 18 games keeps them competitive, while the Yankees continue to struggle, marking their eighth loss in 11 games.
