Messi Makes a Splash with Two Goals in Inter Miami’s 3-1 Victory Over Union!

Messi returns and scores twice as Inter Miami defeats Union 3-1

Lionel Messi returns to the pitch and makes an impressive impact, scoring two goals and providing an assist in Inter Miami’s 3-1 triumph over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night.

The Argentine football legend, an eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient, had been sidelined since June 1 due to national team duties and a right ankle injury he incurred during the Copa America final against Colombia on July 14.

After resuming training three weeks prior, Messi showcased his elite form without any signs of rustiness. He netted two goals within just four minutes in the first half, turning the tide after an early strike from Philadelphia.

In Messi’s absence, Inter Miami recorded an impressive 8-2 record, securing a spot in the MLS playoffs. With a current standing of 19 wins, 4 draws, and 5 losses, Miami leads the Supporters Shield table with 62 points.

Luis Suárez contributed significantly as well, assisting on Messi’s third goal and sealing the victory with a goal of his own during stoppage time, marking his 17th goal of the season.

Messi’s first goal, scored in the 26th minute, leveled the match at 1-1. Suárez delivered a precise pass, allowing Messi to skillfully navigate past Union defender Kai Wagner before slotting the ball inside the left post.

Just four minutes later, Messi capitalized on a crossing pass, firing a 15-yard shot that beat Philadelphia goalkeeper Andrew Rick.

A potential goal from Suárez in the 44th minute was disallowed after a video review confirmed an offside call against Inter Miami.

In the 67th minute, Messi’s recovering ankle took a hit from Philadelphia midfielder Quinn Sullivan during a tussle for the ball. Although Messi fell and appeared to favor his ankle, he quickly rose and continued his performance. Match referee Sergii Boiko issued yellow cards to both Sullivan and Inter Miami’s coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who contested the decision.

Philadelphia, desperate for an equalizer, maintained pressure throughout the second half. However, Messi’s vision shone through as he set up Suárez for an 18-yard strike that solidified Miami’s lead.

Before his hiatus, the 37-year-old Messi had accumulated 12 goals and 13 assists across 12 league matches this season.

The match began with a jolt as Union’s Mikael Uhre shocked the home crowd by scoring just two minutes in.

Messi’s first chance came in the seventh minute when he took a free kick near the half-circle, but it was blocked by a wall of Philadelphia defenders.

Both teams will continue their league campaigns with away matches on Wednesday. Inter Miami is set to face Atlanta on Tuesday, while the Union will visit New York City FC on the same day.
