Luis Suárez retires from Uruguay’s national team at the age of 37, marking the end of an illustrious international career.
The legendary forward, known for his time with clubs like Liverpool and Barcelona, holds the record as Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 142 appearances. He is set to play his final match for the national team on Friday against Paraguay.
“It hurts to say it, but Friday will be my last match with my country’s national team,” Suárez expressed emotionally during a press conference at the iconic Centenario Stadium, where Uruguay will face Paraguay in a crucial World Cup qualifying match.
Having represented Uruguay since 2007, Suárez feels this is the right time to step away from international play. He reflected, “I know that it is difficult for me to get to the next World Cup. Being retired by myself and not by injuries is very comforting.”
Suárez’s career highlights include participation in four World Cups and five Copa America tournaments, where he celebrated victory in 2011. His contributions to the national team have solidified his status as a national icon.
Currently playing for Inter Miami alongside his close friend Lionel Messi, Suárez intends to continue his professional career at the club level. Their partnership at Barcelona from 2014 to 2020 was marked by numerous successes, and now they reunite in the MLS.
