Last season, both Bosas were prominent figures in California football. Now, with Joey’s departure from the Chargers, the 49ers are seen as the leading candidate to bring the brothers together once again.

Joey Bosa was drafted third overall by the Chargers in the 2016 NFL Draft, dedicating nine seasons to the franchise, including one in San Diego and eight in Los Angeles.

His younger brother, Nick Bosa, was selected second overall by the 49ers in the 2019 NFL Draft and continues to shine in San Francisco.

Joey earned the title of Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016 and has been named a Pro Bowler five times, including in 2024, where he recorded five sacks, two forced fumbles, five tackles for loss, and 13 QB hits across 14 games.

At 29 years old, Joey took a pay cut to stay with the Chargers last season. He was set to earn over $25 million in non-guaranteed compensation for the 2025 season, which the Chargers now save in cap space by cutting him.

According to FOX Sports NFL reporter Eric Williams, the 49ers top the list of potential teams for Joey Bosa in free agency.

“A reunion with younger brother Nick Bosa seems like a natural fit. Joey has expressed excitement about the idea of playing alongside his brother, a partnership that last occurred during their high school days. With San Francisco in need of a strong pass-rusher to support Nick, Joey Bosa could be the key to revitalizing the 49ers’ playoff hopes. Additionally, the team practices and plays on grass, which is beneficial for Joey, who is mindful of the impact artificial turf can have on his body.”
