Mike Woodson Reflects on His Indiana Journey: Is It Time to Say Goodbye?

Indiana coach Mike Woodson after his final home game: 'Maybe I'm leaving too soon'

“Maybe I’m leaving too soon.” This poignant reflection from head coach Mike Woodson came after the Indiana Hoosiers celebrated Senior Day with a hard-fought victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday. The emotional weight of the moment was palpable, as Woodson recalled his own memories of playing against Ohio State for the Big Ten title back in 1980.

Woodson’s thoughts resonated with the seniors on the team, who faced the reality of their final season. “For these seniors, this is what it’s all about because they don’t get another shot at it,” he added, emphasizing the importance of the game beyond just a win.

Both the Hoosiers and Buckeyes entered the matchup knowing a win was essential for their NCAA Tournament aspirations. According to Mike Decourcy’s most recent bracket projections, both teams were among the last four to make the tournament cut.

Ohio State initially controlled the game, establishing a 10-point lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the second half. However, Indiana rallied impressively. Senior guard Trey Galloway contributed significantly with two three-pointers during a 12-0 run, allowing the Hoosiers to seize a five-point lead in the closing moments.

With a final score of 66-60, Indiana secured a first-round bye in the Big Ten Tournament and achieved its fifth Quad 1 victory, solidifying its chances for a NCAA Tournament berth.

When it was announced that the 67-year-old Woodson would not return to Bloomington next season, the Hoosiers were sitting at 14-9 overall and 5-7 in Big Ten play. Since that news, they have turned their season around, finishing with a 19-12 record and a 10-10 mark in conference play, climbing from 12th to ninth in the standings.

While Woodson’s coaching journey at Indiana is nearing its end, the Hoosiers still have a significant challenge ahead. They will face the No. 8 seed in the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday, with hopes of making the NCAA Tournament for the third time under his leadership. Although he is set to leave Assembly Hall, the emotional ties and memories he has created with the team linger, leaving fans and players alike wondering what the future holds.
