Hungary Striker Barnabas Varga Injured Against Scotland
During the Euro 2024 group match between Scotland and Hungary, striker Barnabas Varga sustained severe injuries following a second-half collision. The Hungarian Football Federation announced Varga’s condition as stable on social media. He suffered multiple facial fractures and a concussion and is expected to undergo surgery. Varga spent the night in the hospital, and the entire team has been showing their support.
The incident occurred in the 68th minute when Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn collided with his teammate Anthony Ralston and Varga while clearing a free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai. Hungarian players urgently signaled for medical help, visibly upset by the delay. After over six minutes of on-field treatment, Varga was taken off the pitch on a stretcher, surrounded by sheets for privacy, leaving the Stuttgart stadium in stunned silence.
Shortly after Hungary secured a 1-0 victory, dedicated to Varga, coach Marco Rossi confirmed Varga’s stable condition but acknowledged the striker would miss the rest of the competition due to what appeared to be a cheek and eye socket fracture. Hungary remains hopeful for qualification as one of the best third-placed teams, while Germany drew with Switzerland to top the group.
