Tyler Cochran Joins the Gophers for 2024-25 Season
The Gophers men’s basketball team has secured its final scholarship for the 2024-25 season with the addition of Tyler Cochran, a former Toledo player and Oregon State recruit. Cochran, who averaged 14.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists last season, becomes part of a roster filled with nine newcomers, seven of whom are transfers. Coach Ben Johnson’s team will benefit from Cochran’s wealth of experience, having played 111 games, including 68 starts, over his collegiate career.
Hailing from Bolingbrook, Ill., the 6-2, 225-pound senior has previously played for Northern Illinois, Ball State, and Toledo. Last season, he earned All-Mid-American Conference second team and co-Defensive Player of the Year honors despite recovering from a toe injury. Cochran shot an impressive 49.5% from the field and 36% from three-point range, leading the league with 1.9 steals per game. His defensive versatility is expected to be a significant asset for the Gophers.
The Gophers are facing some losses in their backcourt with Elijah Hawkins transferring to Texas Tech and Cam Christie being drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers. However, the return of senior Mike Mitchell Jr. and the addition of other senior-laden transfers like Lu’Cye Patterson, Brennan Rigsby, Caleb Williams, and Femi Odukale offer a seasoned lineup. Cochran aims to join the roster within the week, hoping to contribute significantly and play at the highest level possible in college basketball.
