Gio Reyna won’t play for the U.S. men’s national team until 2025 due to his latest injury setback.
The 21-year-old forward from Borussia Dortmund has been dealing with recurring injuries, the most recent being a left groin strain sustained during a training session with the USMNT last month. This injury caused him to miss two September friendlies: a defeat against Canada and a draw with New Zealand. Following these matches, he returned to Dortmund but has yet to take the field for the Bundesliga club. On Friday, coach Nuri Şahin announced that Reyna, along with teammates Karim Adeyemi and Julien Duranville, would be out of action for at least six more weeks.
“We expect that Juju and Karim will be available again after the international break in November. Unfortunately, Gio had a setback, and it looks similar for him,” Şahin stated ahead of the team’s match against Union Berlin.
Reyna was not named in new U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino’s 25-man roster for upcoming exhibition matches against Panama in Austin, Texas, and Mexico on October 15. The U.S. squad will also compete in two Concacaf Nations League matches in mid-November, marking their last games of the year.
If Şahin’s projected timeline holds true, the next chance for Reyna to don the national team jersey may not come until March.
This season, Reyna has played less than 800 minutes across both Dortmund and Nottingham Forest. After recovering from a leg fracture, he spent the latter half of the previous season on loan to Nottingham, where he struggled for playing time as the team narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League.
His only Bundesliga appearance this season was a brief nine-minute stint during Dortmund’s season opener against Eintracht Frankfurt on August 24.
Gio Reyna, the son of former U.S. World Cup captain Claudio Reyna and U.S. women’s national team player Danielle Egan, has scored eight goals in 31 international matches since his senior debut in 2020.
