Giants Set Their Sights on the Top Spot: Could They Trade Up for the No. 1 Pick in the 2025 NFL Draft?

Giants reportedly a threat to trade up for No. 1 pick in 2025 NFL Draft

Giants reportedly are a threat to trade up for the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, aiming to secure a franchise quarterback. Following their unsuccessful attempt to acquire Matthew Stafford, the New York Giants are shifting their focus and considering a significant move in the upcoming draft.

The Giants have set their sights on the coveted No. 1 overall pick, with speculation suggesting a potential trade with the Tennessee Titans. ESPN reported that if the Giants succeed in this endeavor, they would likely select Cam Ward, the standout quarterback from the University of Miami.

General manager Joe Schoen has indicated that the team is actively exploring quarterback options, including the possibility of using their third overall pick. At the NFL Scouting Combine, he revealed that the Giants have conducted extensive evaluations on both Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, who are widely recognized as the top quarterback prospects for the 2025 draft.

Schoen has also suggested the possibility of acquiring a veteran quarterback alongside drafting a new talent. “We may evaluate both of those. Both may be options,” he stated, emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding draft outcomes and the need for a veteran presence to mentor a young quarterback.

He elaborated, “We’re going to look at vets, we’re going to look at the draft, we’re going to look at trade candidates, we’re going to look under every rock to find the best prospect for us going into the 2025 season.”

The Giants made headlines this offseason by trying to make a significant move for Stafford, reportedly offering up to $100 million guaranteed. However, Stafford chose to stay with the Los Angeles Rams.

After Stafford’s decision, rumors surfaced about the Giants’ interest in Aaron Rodgers, especially with the New York Jets planning to release him when the new league year begins on March 12.

The Giants are also eyeing free-agent quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Russell Wilson, as reported by ESPN. Darnold, who is currently with the Minnesota Vikings, is a potential target since the Vikings did not place a franchise tag on him. Talks about a short-term deal between Darnold and the Vikings are ongoing, according to FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz.

If the Giants fail to secure any of these free agents, the pressure to draft a quarterback with their first-round pick will increase significantly. Their offense has struggled over the past two seasons, with Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Tommy DeVito all failing to make a lasting impact in 2024. Currently, only DeVito remains under contract.

With the Titans and Cleveland Browns holding the No. 2 overall pick, both teams face their own quarterback dilemmas as they head into 2025. Additionally, the Las Vegas Raiders (sixth pick) and New York Jets (seventh pick) present potential challenges for the Giants if they aim to trade up for a top quarterback.
