FOX Sports NFL Analyst and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson has announced his retirement from broadcasting during an appearance on “The Herd” this past Monday.
“Jimmy Johnson was there when FOX NFL SUNDAY launched 31 years ago, and since then, he has been a beloved member of our FOX Sports family. This news about his retirement brings a bittersweet feeling,” said Eric Shanks, CEO of FOX Sports, in a statement.
“He inspired generations of football fans with his legendary swagger, unique insights, and signature humor. His motivating pep talks and unmatched energy made him our coach, always encouraging us to improve. We are incredibly thankful for his role in making FOX NFL SUNDAY the leading pregame show on television, where we shared countless unforgettable moments, including the live surprise announcement of his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame—an event we will always cherish.
“Coach will be deeply missed, and we wish him all the best as he sets sail into retirement, just like only Jimmy Johnson can.”
At 81 years old, Johnson has enjoyed two significant tenures with FOX Sports, first from 1994 to 1995 and again from 2002 to 2024. He famously coached the Dallas Cowboys from 1989 to 1993, leading the team to Super Bowl victories in his final two seasons.
After departing from Dallas for his first stint with FOX in 1994, Johnson took the helm of the Miami Dolphins in 1996, where he recorded a regular-season record of 36-28 and a postseason record of 2-3 from 1996 to 1999. He returned to FOX in 2002.
Before his NFL coaching career, Johnson was the head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys from 1979 to 1983 and the Miami Hurricanes from 1984 to 1988. His tenure with the Hurricanes included a national championship in 1987 and an impressive 52-9 record.
Since 2008, Johnson has shared the FOX set with notable personalities like Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, and Michael Strahan. Interestingly, Bradshaw, Long, and Johnson were all part of the original set when it debuted in 1994.
