H2: Sean Burroughs: MLB Star Dies of Fentanyl Overdose
Sean Burroughs, a former MLB infielder, passed away in May at the age of 43 due to a fentanyl overdose. The Los Angeles County medical examiner confirmed that his death was accidental. Burroughs was found unresponsive in a Long Beach parking lot after dropping off his 6-year-old son at a Little League game. Despite initial reports citing cardiac arrest, the official cause of death was fentanyl intoxication.
Burroughs had openly struggled with addiction, as noted in a 2011 interview with ESPN. He described himself as someone who would consume substances, both legal and illegal, to cope. At the time of his passing, he was coaching his son’s Little League team. His mother, Debbie, initially believed he died of cardiac arrest, a detail that was later clarified by the medical examiner.
A notable figure in baseball, Burroughs played for the San Diego Padres and other teams over a seven-season career. He gained earlier fame by leading Long Beach to two Little League World Series titles in 1992 and 1993. He debuted in MLB in 2002, hitting .282 with 11 home runs during his tenure. Burroughs also earned a gold medal with Team USA at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
