Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is set to return to the field during the 2024 season, according to head coach Mike McDaniel’s comments to the media on Monday.
This marks the first instance where McDaniel has indicated a clear expectation for Tagovailoa’s return after he sustained a concussion in Week 2. However, McDaniel did not provide a specific timeline, noting that Tagovailoa will not be participating in this week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app.
“He is still gathering information this week, and regarding timelines,” McDaniel explained. “I do expect to see him back in action in 2024, but we will allow the process to unfold since we have time before making any decisions.”
“We will ensure he remains diligent this week and evaluate the situation afterward.”
Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve following his concussion during a loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2. This decision ruled him out for the next four games, meaning he cannot return to practice until after Week 7. If activated, he could potentially return for the Dolphins’ Week 8 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
This concussion was Tagovailoa’s third since the 2022 season. He exhibited a fencing response after a collision with Bills safety Damar Hamlin, raising concerns similar to those surrounding his earlier injuries. Fortunately, he managed to walk off the field unaided after the incident. Following the injury, Tagovailoa was scheduled to consult with several independent neurologists, as McDaniel had noted.
The Dolphins’ offense has struggled in Tagovailoa’s absence. The team experienced three consecutive losses before securing a narrow victory against the New England Patriots in Week 5, winning 15-10 and improving their record to 2-3 before their bye week. Currently, Miami ranks last in the league in scoring, averaging just 12 points per game.
Statistically, Tagovailoa has been among the top quarterbacks in the league since joining McDaniel in 2022. In the 2023 season, he threw for 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions, contributing significantly to Miami’s playoff appearances in the last two years.
