Freddie Freeman is out for Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, while Michael Kopech will take the mound as the opener for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers are set to utilize a strategy involving multiple relievers in their quest for a record 25th NL pennant.
Kopech, a right-handed pitcher, will kick off Sunday’s bullpen game at Dodger Stadium, facing off against the New York Mets, who find themselves trailing 3-2 in the best-of-seven series.
“We believe this gives us the best chance to keep them scoreless in the first inning and build momentum from there,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated prior to the matchup. “We plan to rotate through several pitchers throughout the game.”
Kopech last took the mound on Wednesday in Game 3, where he secured a win by striking out one batter in a scoreless inning. Across five playoff appearances, he has allowed just one hit and two walks, while striking out six over 4 1/3 innings without giving up a run.
Acquired from the Chicago White Sox during a three-team trade at the July deadline, Kopech has made a significant impact since joining the Dodgers. In 24 games with the team, he boasts a perfect 4-0 record, a remarkable 1.13 ERA, and 29 strikeouts, along with six saves over 24 innings pitched.
With several well-rested relievers available, Kopech is poised to lead the bullpen effort effectively.
In a notable absence, All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman will not be part of the lineup due to a sprained right ankle. Max Muncy will step in for Freeman and bat fifth in the order.
“He felt that another day of rest would be beneficial for him,” Roberts remarked. “He just hasn’t been himself lately.”
