Donovan Clingan was eager for a third consecutive championship, but UConn’s head coach Dan Hurley insisted he move on. Clingan, who was picked seventh overall by the Trail Blazers in the NBA Draft, shared on the “Knuckleheads” podcast that he offered to return but Hurley rejected the idea. Hurley, celebrating their recent title win, told Clingan he was “out of his mind” for wanting to stay.
Despite Hurley’s stern advice, Clingan expressed deep affection for UConn, describing it as home and indicating his reluctance to leave. Clingan averaged 13 points and 7.4 rebounds last season, helping the Huskies secure their second national championship.
Clingan also revealed that Hurley turned down a lucrative offer from the Lakers to stick with UConn. Clingan believes Hurley will eventually coach in the NBA but appreciates that Hurley is dedicated to UConn for now. Hurley recently signed a six-year, $50 million deal with UConn, turning down a $70 million offer from the Lakers.
