Brandon Aubrey: The Tom Brady of Kickers Taking the NFL by Storm!

‘Steph Curry of kickers’: Why Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey embraces Tom Brady’s comparison

“Steph Curry of kickers” is a title that resonates with Dallas Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey, especially after he nailed a 65-yard field goal, just one yard shy of the NFL’s longest kick record. This impressive feat caught the attention of Tom Brady, who made the comparison between Aubrey and the NBA’s sharpshooter, framing it as a nod to Aubrey’s remarkable confidence and skill.

Aubrey, in his second year with the Cowboys, was quick to embrace Brady’s compliment. He acknowledged the viral video that highlighted the comparison, stating that it was a “pretty cool” moment for him. His response reflects not only his humility but also his understanding of the weight such a comparison carries in the sports world.

“That was a really neat moment and a comparison that I never would have thought of,” Aubrey expressed. “But I think it makes sense.” His confidence shines through as he discusses the belief he wants his coaches and teammates to have in him; he aims to show that no kick is too long for him to attempt. Since joining the Cowboys, he has made 15 consecutive field goals of 50 yards or more, setting a record for the most 50-yard kicks to start a career in NFL history.

Cowboys receiver KaVontae Turpin remarked after a recent game, “You feel like they’re just automatic for him right now.” Aubrey’s coaches share this sentiment. They witnessed him successfully execute a 66-yard field goal during a preseason game in Las Vegas and another impressive kick in Week 1 in Cleveland, though a delay of game penalty prevented a record-tying attempt.

When the opportunity arose for a potential record-breaking 71-yarder right before halftime, special teams coach John Fassel admitted they “considered” sending Aubrey out again. Aubrey was ready, warming up and eager to take the shot. “Yeah, coach puts me out there. I got nothing to lose,” he said, showcasing his fearless approach to the game.

Aubrey’s journey to becoming a premier kicker is as unique as his skill set. Initially a soccer player at Notre Dame, he transitioned to professional soccer in the MLS and the United Soccer League before pivoting to football. Remarkably, he only began place-kicking in 2019, inspired by a casual comment from his wife, Jenn, while watching an NFL game. This pivotal moment led him to train for three years before making his mark with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL.

Despite a solid start in the USFL, where he converted 86.5% of his field goals, his longest kick was just 49 yards. However, since joining the NFL, he has shattered expectations, making 35 consecutive field goals to kick off his career. His accuracy is impressive, finishing his rookie season with 36 successful attempts out of 38, including a perfect 10 for 10 from 50 yards and beyond.

This season, Aubrey continues to impress, maintaining a perfect record of 10 for 10 overall, with five successful attempts from 50 yards or longer. His remarkable 95.8% success rate in 20 NFL games, including 100% from beyond 50 yards, highlights his elite status among kickers.

Aubrey attributes his success to maintaining a consistent approach. He avoids altering his technique, focusing instead on hitting the ball higher for added distance when necessary. “It’s a calm look for sure, but the heart is racing,” he noted, emphasizing the mental preparation that accompanies each kick.

This mindset mirrors that of Stephen Curry, who is known for his confidence and precision on the basketball court. Aubrey appears unfazed as he attempts long field goals, embodying the belief that no distance is too great. “For me, knowing that my range is further than they’ll ever ask me to go out and kick the ball gives me the confidence to go out there and hit these long balls,” he shared, underlining the importance of self-belief in achieving success.

Ultimately, Aubrey’s journey from soccer to NFL kicker illustrates his adaptability and determination. He emphasizes that every kicker must find their confidence, a sentiment that resonates with anyone striving to excel in their field. His story serves as an inspiration, showing that with hard work and belief in oneself, remarkable achievements are possible.
