The Cleveland Browns are concerned that quarterback Deshaun Watson has suffered a season-ending Achilles tear.
During a recent game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Watson was carted off the field after sustaining a right Achilles tendon injury on a non-contact play. Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed post-game that the team fears the worst and is awaiting further tests to confirm the diagnosis.
Watson’s tenure in Cleveland has been marked by underperformance and controversy, and this latest injury adds to the challenges he has faced in his two-plus seasons with the team. The injury occurred with 1:26 remaining in the first half during a second-down play.
As he attempted to throw a pass from the Cincinnati 21-yard line, Watson’s right leg buckled when he planted his foot, causing him to collapse to the ground.
In visible distress, Watson clutched his head while lying on the field. The Browns’ medical staff quickly rushed to his aid, joined by players from both teams who offered their support during this troubling moment.
As he was taken off the field, Watson covered his head with a towel, a gesture that resonated with fans who applauded him despite the circumstances.
Shortly after halftime, the team announced that Watson had indeed injured his Achilles tendon and would not return to the game.
The Browns had signed Watson to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract in 2022, but his time with the franchise has been tumultuous. He faced an 11-game suspension in his first season and was limited to just six games in his second season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.
This season, Watson’s performance has drawn criticism, leading to calls from fans for Stefanski to bench him. He faced boos during pregame introductions, illustrating the growing frustration among the fan base.
Before his injury, Watson completed 15 of 17 passes for 128 yards, but he was sacked twice. Following his departure, second-year quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson took over, marking his first time as Watson’s backup this season, ahead of Jameis Winston.
Thompson-Robinson struggled, finishing 11 of 24 for 82 yards with two interceptions, while also leading the team in rushing with 44 yards on three attempts. He exited late in the game with a finger injury, leaving Winston to step in. Winston managed to throw a touchdown pass to David Njoku with just 1:27 left on the clock, but the Browns ultimately lost 21-14, dropping their record to 1-6 this season.
Adding to the complexity of Watson’s situation, the NFL is still investigating a recent allegation of sexual assault against him. Watson reached a confidential settlement regarding that case, which has added to the scrutiny surrounding his career.
