Blue Jackets Updates: Coaching Team, Sillinger, Johnson

Columbus Blue Jackets’ Coaching Staff: A Fresh Perspective

Hey there, hockey fans! Got some juicy news from the Columbus Blue Jackets’ corner. Aaron Portzline of The Athletic just shared that the new head coach, Dean Evason, is going to have a sit-down with current assistant coaches Mark Recchi, Jared Boll, and Steve McCarthy in the coming days. This scoop came straight from the team’s general manager, Don Waddell. It sounds like there could be some shifts in the coaching squad, but don’t expect a total shake-up. All three assistant coaches are still under contract through the 2024-25 season.

The Assistant Coaches: Who Are They?

Mark Recchi

Mark Recchi is a relatively new face in Columbus, having joined the team less than a year ago in September. Though he may not be a veteran on the Blue Jackets bench, his hockey credentials speak for themselves. Recchi brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and a coach, and it’ll be fascinating to see how he complements Evason moving forward.

Jared Boll

Jared Boll, on the other hand, has been with the Blue Jackets for a bit longer. Starting as an assistant development coach back in 2018, Boll worked his way up the ranks to become an assistant coach. Boll’s familiarity with the team dynamics might be his biggest asset. He knows the ins and outs of the organization, which could offer some much-needed continuity as they adjust to new leadership.

Steve McCarthy

Steve McCarthy rounds out the trio, joining the Blue Jackets coaching staff in September 2021 after a solid stint with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters. McCarthy also has a history with the Blue Jackets, which can only help when navigating any changes that might arise from upcoming talks with Evason.

What’s Next for Blue Jackets Players?

While the coaching staff news is buzzing, there’s plenty of chatter about the players too. Here’s what Aaron Portzline had to say on the Front and Nationwide podcast.

Cole Sillinger: Poised for a Big Contract?

First up, Cole Sillinger. This 21-year-old forward is a restricted free agent, and there are speculations that a multi-year contract extension could be on the table this summer. Sillinger had a breakout last season, notching up 32 points with 13 goals and 19 assists. Given his marked improvement from a challenging 2022-23 season, locking him down now might be a savvy move for Waddell before his stock (and price) soars.

Kent Johnson: Short-Term Deal in the Cards?

Another hot topic is restricted free agent forward Kent Johnson. The 21-year-old is expected to sign a one-year deal this summer, aiming to re-enter contract talks next year under hopefully better circumstances. Last season was a rough ride for Johnson, marred by inconsistency and injuries, including a season-ending shoulder injury in February. He managed just six goals and 10 assists in 42 games. Johnson banking on himself for a bounce-back season makes total sense.

What’s the Bottom Line?

Columbus Blue Jackets fans, there’s definitely an air of anticipation. The possible tweaks to the coaching squad under Dean Evason and the contract scenarios for young talents like Sillinger and Johnson make it an exciting time. With a mix of new strategies and emerging stars, the Blue Jackets are gearing up for what could be an eventful season. Stay tuned, and let’s see how this all unfolds on the ice!
