USWNT, Portland Thorns forward Sophia Wilson announces she is pregnant

Portland Thorns and United States women’s national team forward Sophia Wilson has announced she is pregnant.

Wilson, formerly known by her maiden name Smith, shared the news with her fans on Instagram. In a heartfelt post, she displayed a strip of sonogram photos while being embraced by her husband, Michael Wilson, who plays as a wide receiver for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.

“Life just keeps getting sweeter,” she wrote in her caption, reflecting her joy.

At just 24 years old, Wilson was part of the national team that clinched the gold medal at the Paris Olympics last summer. The trio of Wilson, Trinity Rodman, and Mallory Swanson, known to fans as “Triple Espresso,” showcased their remarkable talent on the field.

Wilson also played in the 2023 Women’s World Cup and has made 58 appearances for the national team, scoring an impressive 24 goals. Her accolades include being named U.S. Soccer women’s player of the year in 2022 and young player of the year in 2017.

She was the first overall pick in the National Women’s Soccer League draft in 2020 after leading Stanford to victory in the 2019 NCAA College Cup championship. Wilson’s standout performance included three goals in the semifinal against UCLA, earning her the title of most valuable player.

During her five seasons with the Thorns, she has netted 44 goals across all competitions and was named the NWSL’s most valuable player in 2022, contributing to Portland’s league title win.

The Thorns expressed their excitement, stating, “We are overjoyed to share that @sophiawilson and her husband Michael are expecting their first child! The Thorns are proud to support her through this incredible new chapter.”

As the Thorns prepare for their 2025 season opener on March 15 against the Kansas City Current, fans eagerly anticipate both Wilson’s journey into motherhood and her continued contributions to women’s soccer.
