Smith Steps Down as Head Basketball Coach at SUNY Morrisville

Joe Smith, men’s basketball coach and assistant athletic director, is resigning from SUNY Morrisville after leading the program for 15 years. He aims to pursue a new administrative role in intercollegiate athletics. His impressive tenure includes a record of 233 wins and 143 losses, appearances in five NCAA Division III Tournaments, and three Coach of the Year awards.

Throughout his career, Smith achieved several milestones with the Mustangs, including taking the team to the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 in consecutive seasons. Under his leadership, the team secured five North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships and nine total tournament bids. Smith’s coaching also brought numerous accolades for his players, highlighting their outstanding performances on and off the court.

Beyond coaching, Smith fulfilled responsibilities as an assistant athletic director, contributing to fundraising and event management. SUNY Morrisville Director of Athletics, Matt Grawrock, praised Smith for his dedication and significant contributions. A national search for his successor is now underway, with inquiries directed to Grawrock.
