2024 Big Ten Power Rankings: Ohio State and Top Contenders Dominate the Field!

2024 Big Ten power rankings: Ohio State, conference powers, keep rolling

2024 Big Ten power rankings show Ohio State firmly at the top, continuing its reign as a powerhouse in college football. This past weekend, three top-10 teams faced unexpected defeats, including No. 2 Georgia’s loss to Alabama, No. 6 Ole Miss falling to Kentucky, and No. 10 Utah being upset by Arizona. Despite this turmoil, the Big Ten’s elite remained steady, with five of its six ranked teams securing vital victories. The only exception was No. 19 Illinois, which battled hard but ultimately succumbed to No. 9 Penn State in a closely contested matchup.

As the transition from September to October unfolds, the conference race is beginning to crystallize. Ohio State stands out as the clear favorite after a commanding win against Michigan State. Meanwhile, Oregon, Penn State, USC, Michigan, and Iowa are emerging as credible challengers. Unexpectedly, Indiana and Rutgers are also making headlines, striving to prove their worth in this competitive landscape.

Here are the latest Big Ten Power Rankings following Week 5:

1. Ohio State (4-0 overall, 1-0 Big Ten)

Result: 38-7 road win over Michigan State

In a game that started close, Ohio State quickly turned the tide. Freshman standout Jeremiah Smith, the top recruit of the 2024 class, showcased his skills with two touchdowns in the final minutes of the first half. His dynamic plays, including a remarkable one-handed catch from backup quarterback Devin Brown, highlighted the Buckeyes’ offensive prowess. Smith finished with five receptions for 83 yards, while Emeka Egbuka added to the team’s success with seven catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. Ohio State’s defense proved formidable, stifling Michigan State’s offense and forcing three turnovers, setting the stage for their upcoming game against Iowa.

2. Penn State (4-0 overall, 1-0 Big Ten)

Result: 21-7 home win over No. 19 Illinois

Penn State’s defense has been a force to reckon with, allowing only 10 points over the last three games. Their recent performance against Illinois was no exception, limiting the Illini to just 219 total yards. The Nittany Lions’ running back duo, Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, combined for an impressive 196 rushing yards and two touchdowns, solidifying their status as a top contender. This weekend, they will face UCLA, aiming to maintain their undefeated streak.

3. Oregon (4-0 overall, 1-0 Big Ten)

Result: 34-13 road win over UCLA

4. Michigan (4-1 overall, 2-0 Big Ten)

Result: 27-24 home win over Minnesota

Michigan’s defense and run-heavy strategy allowed them to build a significant lead against Minnesota. However, a late-game surge from the Gophers nearly turned the tide. Quarterback Alex Orji, still finding his rhythm, was supported by tailback Kalel Mullings, who rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns. The Wolverines will face Washington in their first road game this weekend.

5. USC (3-1 overall, 1-1 Big Ten)

Result: 38-21 home win over Wisconsin

6. Illinois (4-1 overall, 1-1 Big Ten)

Result: 21-7 road loss to No. 9 Penn State

Illinois showed resilience in their loss against Penn State, staying competitive until the final moments. Despite a strong start, they struggled to maintain momentum, with quarterback Luke Altmyer facing significant pressure from the Nittany Lions’ defense. The Illini will look to rebound in their next matchup.

7. Rutgers (4-0 overall, 1-0 Big Ten)

Result: 21-18 home win over Washington

8. Indiana (5-0 overall, 2-0 Big Ten)

Result: 42-28 home win over Maryland

Indiana’s 5-0 start is their best since 1967, raising questions about their true capabilities. The Hoosiers have dominated their opponents but face skepticism due to their opponents’ unimpressive records. They will encounter Northwestern next, aiming to solidify their standing.

9. Iowa (3-1 overall, 1-0 Big Ten)

Result: Idle

Iowa took a break following a solid road win at Minnesota. They are gearing up for a critical matchup against Ohio State, the only ranked team left on their schedule.

10. Nebraska (4-1 overall, 1-1 Big Ten)

Result: 28-10 road win over Purdue

11. Michigan State (3-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten)

Result: 38-7 home loss to No. 3 Ohio State

Despite the lopsided score, Michigan State’s early performance showed promise under first-year coach Jonathan Smith. However, turnovers proved costly as they prepare for a challenging game against Oregon.

12. Washington (3-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten)

Result: 21-18 road loss to Rutgers

Washington struggled in their first Big Ten road game, despite outgaining Rutgers. Missed opportunities and field goals haunted them as they prepare for a rematch against Michigan.

13. Wisconsin (2-2 overall, 0-1 Big Ten)

Result: 38-21 road loss to No. 13 USC

Wisconsin faced a tough loss against USC after leading at halftime. Their inability to score in the second half raised concerns as they look to regroup.

14. Northwestern (2-2 overall, 0-1 Big Ten)

Result: Idle

Northwestern is looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss two weeks ago, preparing to host the undefeated Indiana.

15. Maryland (3-2 overall, 0-2 Big Ten)

Result: 42-28 road loss to Indiana

Maryland’s defense struggled against Indiana, allowing significant yardage and points. They will need to tighten their game plan moving forward.

16. Minnesota (2-3 overall, 0-2 Big Ten)

Result: 27-24 road loss to No. 12 Michigan

Minnesota’s running game has faltered this season, struggling against Michigan. Coach P.J. Fleck faces challenges as they seek to redefine their offensive identity.

17. UCLA (1-3 overall, 0-2 Big Ten)

Result: 34-13 home loss to No. 8 Oregon

UCLA’s offense struggled significantly against Oregon, failing to score a touchdown. They are in dire need of improvement as they face No. 7 Penn State next.

18. Purdue (1-3 overall, 0-1 Big Ten)

Result: 28-10 home loss to Nebraska

Purdue’s struggles continue, leading to the firing of offensive coordinator Graham Harrell after a disappointing start. The team is in search of a new direction as they look to improve their performance.
