Matt Crocker, the U.S. Soccer Sporting Director leading the search for Berhalter’s successor, has outlined his desire for a coach with a proven history of success. He refers to this ideal candidate as a “serial winner,” underscoring the importance of a strong track record in competitive environments.
Adams, who served as captain during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, emphasizes the need for a coach who can effectively align with the players’ strengths and playing style. He believes that finding the right fit is crucial for the team’s future success.

“If everyone wants to focus on the 2026 World Cup and getting the best result possible, you have to get someone who’s gotten results. How else do you guarantee that?” Adams stated, reinforcing the need for a results-oriented leader.
Reports from FOX Sports indicate that the USSF is keen on attracting the “most accomplished international manager possible.” Names like Mauricio Pochettino, Gareth Southgate, Luis de la Fuente, and Pellegrino Matarazzo have emerged as potential candidates for the role.
The federation aims to appoint a new head coach by the September international window, with a significant match against Canada, coached by Jesse Marsch, scheduled for September 7 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.
