Packers HC Matt LaFleur: Aaron Rodgers to Vikings 'would be a hell of a story'

Aaron Rodgers joining the Minnesota Vikings would indeed be a remarkable chapter in his NFL journey, following the footsteps of Brett Favre, who made a similar move from the Green Bay Packers to the Jets and then to the Vikings. This potential storyline has caught the attention of many, including Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.

“It would be a hell of a story, wouldn’t it?” LaFleur remarked during the NFL owners’ meetings, as reported by ESPN. “There are talented players on every team, so if it works out, it works out. It’s not something I dwell on constantly. Sure, you consider it when preparing to face a team.”

“But if it works out, great for them,” he added, hinting at the unpredictable nature of player movements in the league.

Rodgers, who parted ways with the Jets in March after two seasons, has been the subject of speculation linking him to both the Vikings and the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. Meanwhile, the New York Giants seem to be out of the running after signing veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.

The Steelers’ interest in Rodgers has intensified, especially after losing both Wilson and Justin Fields to free agency. Last season, Wilson started 12 games for Pittsburgh, while Fields contributed in six. Recently, Rodgers was spotted throwing passes to newly acquired Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf, who is a two-time Pro Bowler.

On the other hand, Minnesota is coming off a strong 14-3 season. However, they faced an early exit in the wild-card round and subsequently lost quarterback Sam Darnold, who had an impressive season with 4,319 passing yards and 35 touchdowns. Darnold has since signed a lucrative three-year, $100.5 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Vikings have shown confidence in second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, whom they selected with the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, McCarthy’s progress has been hindered due to a torn meniscus that kept him out of the entire 2024 season. Currently, Minnesota is not actively pursuing Rodgers, but they haven’t completely ruled out the possibility.

In the previous season, Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, recorded 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, achieving a passer rating of 90.5 while completing 63% of his passes. His first season with the Jets was cut short when he suffered a torn Achilles on the very first drive of the season.

The Vikings have had the upper hand against the Packers lately, winning six of their last nine encounters and sweeping the 2024 season series. Meanwhile, Green Bay finished with an 11-6 record, placing third in the NFC North, before being eliminated by the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the wild-card round.

As LaFleur enters his seventh season as head coach of the Packers, he boasts a solid record of 67 wins against 33 losses in the regular season, along with a 3-5 postseason record.
