Mike Tomlin has no issue with Aaron Rodgers taking his time to decide about his future in football. While many fans are eagerly awaiting the four-time MVP’s announcement regarding his participation in the upcoming season, the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach remains unfazed.
At the NFL owners meetings, Tomlin expressed his enjoyment of Rodgers’ recent visit to the Steelers’ facility, emphasizing that he does not feel the need to impose any deadlines on the quarterback.
“Deadlines don’t often bring that to a head,” Tomlin noted, indicating that he prefers a more relaxed approach to the situation.
As the NFL Draft approaches in less than four weeks, the Steelers hold the 21st overall pick, yet Tomlin remains unconcerned about the ticking clock.
Rodgers, who is a free agent for the first time in his storied 20-year career, has been rumored to be a target for teams like the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants. However, the Giants’ recent signings of Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston seem to have closed that door.
The Vikings, too, seem settled at quarterback with J.J. McCarthy returning from an injury that sidelined him during his rookie season.

This situation raises questions about whether Rodgers is truly interested in joining the Steelers or if he is contemplating retirement altogether.
The Steelers did re-sign Mason Rudolph to a two-year contract, but the only other quarterback on the roster is Skylar Thompson, formerly of the Miami Dolphins. This leaves ample room for the Steelers to explore further options.
“We’re optimistic about the room that we’re constructing,” Tomlin stated, adding that they will continue to evaluate all possibilities for enhancing their quarterback lineup.
Tomlin and Rodgers have shared a mutual respect over the years, often acknowledging each other during games in moments that have captured fans’ attention on social media.
Despite Rodgers leaving without a contract after his visit, Tomlin described the day as “a really good day,” highlighting the positive nature of their interaction.
Since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement in 2021, Pittsburgh has struggled with quarterback instability, cycling through five different players in three seasons while still managing to reach the playoffs twice.
The new quarterback will have the opportunity to connect with DK Metcalf, who was traded from Seattle three weeks ago. Tomlin expressed confidence that the two-time Pro Bowler will be a significant contributor.
“It’s not only in terms of the tangible things that he brings, but there’s an awesome intangible quality to him as a worker and as a man that’s equally exciting,” Tomlin remarked, underscoring the value Metcalf adds to the team.
